GUIDE FOR USING THE CAMPAIGN VIDEO

What is the goal of the Early Learning Illinois campaign?

Early Learning Illinois is a new campaign that is rallying people across the state to help ensure that all children are healthy, eager to learn, and ready to succeed by the time they enter kindergarten.  The campaign aims to raise public awareness and support for improving and expanding early learning options for all children—starting at birth—and supporting parents in their role as children’s first teachers.

How can the short film be used?

The short film (12 minutes) builds a compelling case for making a significant public investment in high-quality early learning programs.  The film is intended to spark discussion about this issue and urge viewers to take action. The film can be used in a variety of ways.   Here are a few examples of possible venues:

In your home: Host a “coffee” for friends and neighbors; show it at a regular meeting of your book group.

At your office: Show it as part of a regular staff or board meeting; use it as a conversation-starter for a “brown-bag” lunch seminar.

At your school or child care center: Show it at staff or parent meetings.

At your church or civic organization.

What is the recommended format for a meeting using this film?

1. Show the short film (12 minutes)

2. Have a discussion

Here are some suggestions for discussion:

  • What can each of us do today to raise awareness in our community about the benefits of early learning and the need to invest public resources in our youngest children?

  • How can we best communicate to policy leaders that early learning is a top priority for Illinois —and requires more attention and action immediately?

  • Can you identify particular strengths among the existing preschool, child care, or other early learning programs in your community?

  • What are the most significant obstacles for families when it comes to participating in local preschool, child care, and other early learning programs?

3. Encourage participants to take action

Included in this kit is an action guide and a sample letter to legislators. These two documents can be used as handouts at your meeting.  All our elected officials need to hear from their constituents that early learning is important; personal letters are one of the most effective advocacy tools.

Another way meeting participants can take action is to share this information with friends, colleagues, etc. by showing the video to another group.  We encourage you to share this video with others.

4. Return the feedback form to the Early Learning Illinois campaign

We want to hear how your meeting went!  We are very interested in knowing the reaction of your audience to the video as well as ideas for moving forward and concerns.  A feedback form is included in your kit.  You can also contact Julie Parente.
